Start with the operating workflow, not the word “robot”.
With an operator-controlled remote mower, a person directs the machine during the job. An autonomous mower uses its documented navigation and work-area system to carry out a mowing task, although setup, monitoring, maintenance and intervention may still be needed. Neither label establishes the cutting system, fuel, site suitability or the amount of supervision required.
A remote function can also appear on an autonomous machine for setup or positioning. That does not make every machine with a remote function autonomous. Equally, a product described as a “robot mower” may simply be controlled by an operator. Ask what happens after Start is pressed: who chooses the route, controls turns, detects a blocked path and restarts after an interruption?
Compare the tasks the buyer must organise.
| Purchase question | Operator-controlled remote mower | Autonomous mower |
|---|---|---|
| Who steers during the job? | The operator directs movement through the remote controls. | The documented navigation system follows its configured work method; supervision requirements still depend on the model. |
| How is the working area defined? | The operator plans and controls the route under the manual and site procedures. | Ask about boundaries, mapping, positioning coverage, exclusion zones and setup requirements. |
| What happens at an interruption? | Confirm control-loss, stop and recovery procedures for the exact machine. | Confirm obstacle, positioning-loss, recovery and restart behaviour; do not assume unattended recovery. |
| What does an app mean? | An app may provide controls or settings if the quoted model includes it. | An app may provide scheduling or mapping; its presence alone does not demonstrate autonomous operation. |
The table compares operating concepts, not a performance trial or a claim that all autonomous mowers use the same technology. As one manufacturer example, Husqvarna describes boundary-wire operation and specific wire-free EPOS systems in its Automower operating guide. Verify the system fitted to the model you are considering rather than treating that example as a universal specification.
What does the ZHUOJIE catalog actually describe?
The current website catalog describes remote-controlled equipment. It does not document autonomous route planning, automatic boundary mapping or automatic docking for the named mower examples below. Do not infer those features from a chassis shape, a promotional label or the ability to operate from a distance.
The H-550L-A lists a 550 mm cut, gasoline engine and 300 m remote range. The H-800L-D lists an 800 mm cut and 500 m remote range. Those are catalog specifications for distinct machines; a larger range does not mean the machine navigates itself. Confirm the supplied controller, available functions and operating instructions with the exact quotation.
If autonomous mowing is essential, state the functions you require in writing. Ask for the relevant manual, configuration and a demonstration of that workflow. If the offered equipment does not document those functions, it should not be shortlisted as an autonomous solution.
Choose around the work you need to repeat.
For a buyer comparing regular lawn maintenance, ask about the intended vegetation, mowing frequency, finish, boundaries, charging or refuelling arrangements and obstacles. For a buyer considering remote cutting on an orchard, bank or overgrown plot, ask about access, full machine dimensions, cutting system, ground conditions and a suitable operator route. These questions help define the job; they do not establish that either operating concept is automatically suitable.
Consider who is available to operate or supervise the equipment. A labour estimate should include setup, moving between areas, inspections, cleaning, maintenance and interruption handling—not only time spent steering. An autonomous feature does not eliminate these tasks, and remote operation does not eliminate site planning.
Ask for a demonstration of the workflow you intend to buy.
- Show normal operation and identify the person or system directing the route.
- Identify what is standard equipment and what is optional.
- Explain setup, operating boundaries, stop functions and recovery instructions.
- Show how a normal interruption is handled under the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Provide the manual for the exact model and configuration.
Describe the operating method you need
Use the site worksheet to organise the job, then ask for an exact-model recommendation in the quote form. Include “operator-controlled remote mowing” or the specific autonomous functions you require.
